Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is based on the children's storybook created by author Judi Barrett & illustrator Ron Barrett in 1978. The sequel, Pickles to Pittsburgh, follows in 2000. The animated feature film is a 3D rendered, CGI creation produced by Sony Pictures Animation and distributed by Columbia Pictures in 2009 with a budget of $100 million. The movie was shown in 3D using RealD Cinema, IMAX 3D, and Dolby 3D.
When the town's only claim to fame (the local Sardine cannery) closes, Flint Lockwood decides to try and invent a machine that converts water molecules into food. Seeking out enough electricity to make this possible, Flint hooks up his device to the local power plant. This causes it to explode, sending it up into the clouds. Later large purple clouds form and rain down cheeseburgers. Soon word leaks out of the FLDSMDFR (Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator) and the greedy Mayor wants to profit on the idea of breathing new life into the local economy, changing the town's name from Swallow Falls to Chewandswallow and cranking up the setting on the device. Flint, along with a little help from his pals, sets out to destroy the device and save the town.
Music is composed by Mark Mothersbaugh while "Raining Sunshine" performed by Miranda Cosgrove is the hit single from the movie.
Meet the Characters
Sid is a young 5 year-old who seeks to know a lot things about a lot of things through his inquisitive powers of observation. Oftentimes Sid has a Super-duper-ooper-schmooper Big Idea! who wants to be a scientist when he grows up and is voiced by Drew Massey.
Gerald is Flint's mother who always believed in him and is voiced by Lauren Graham.
Gerald is Sid's airheaded, vivacious good friend. He is 4 years old and distinguished by an unusual tuft of hair on his head and remarkably reddened skin. He often stalls at the start of Rug Time, attempting a very appreciated light-humored gig. He has a dog, a Jack Russell terrier called Chester. He is a very valued character of the quartet, perhaps the most vivid character of the group, often being the life and soul of activities. A running gag is that he is always trying to be funny, but fails miserably. Voiced by Victor Yerrid.
May is the old-fashioned, technophobic, but supportive father of Flint who wants his son to work at his Bait N' Tackle shop and is voiced by James Caan.
Gabriela, a cute, young weather intern from New York City dreams of a chance to become a professional TV weather reporter and ultimately Flint's love interest. She is voiced by Anna Faris.
Susie is Sam's uncommunicative, Guatemalan TV cameraman with a very special skill set (doctor, comedian, pilot) and is voiced by Benjamin Bratt.
Trivia: Sid actually has a Black mother and a Jewish father. Feel free to look around a bit.
